Griffin iTalk Pro - Microphone Review

Griffin iTalk Pro - Microphone
Average Reviews:

This product - used for the first time today - worked perfectly. I needed to record a meeting and certainly preferred the option of that recording then becoming a digital file (visible to and stored in ITunes). Once attached to the IPod, it was a couple of clicks to simply begin recording. The two pieces of equipment 'recognized' one another without a hitch. I recorded a 40-minute meeting, came home, connected my IPod to my computer and - snap - the recorded 'memo' immediately downloaded from the IPod to ITunes. The sound quality is fine (I didn't use an additional microphone) and I especially like having a permanant copy of this meeting in a digital format. I should note this was an interview in a quiet room where the IPod was placed between two people on a desk. No ambient noises to be concerned about, no long distances to cover. Will it work under those conditions? I don't know. But it did what I needed it to do. Very handy. FYI, I recorded in 'high' quality and the file size was about 400 MB. My experience has been that Griffin delivers quality products that integrate well with Apple products. No muss, no fuss.

I'm using kJames on my Mac to convert mp3/cdg files to Quicktime mp4 files. With that and a video iPod, I get a true karaoke experience and the iKaraoke works great. In my experience, vocal cancelling never really works so I expected nothing more from this. However with true karaoke files, I think you'll be pleased. We used the iKaraoke on a car trip today, and it was a blast. I only wish there were built-in mic level controls on the microphone.

Bring the fun of karaoke into your living room with the iKaraoke from GriffinTechnology. Designed to interface between most iPods with dock connectors and yourhome stereo, the iKaraoke works by silencing the lead vocal track of your favoritesongs, letting you step up to the mic in your own voice. It's particularly great for parties,as you aren't restricted to traditional karaoke favorites but can instead sing along to anysong you want. If your iPod has it, you can sing to it. Controlling the selection is easythanks to the integrated buttons on the microphone, including buttons for pausing, scanning forward or backward, and even temporarily adding the vocals back in to helpyou find your place. And thanks to the built-in reverb effects, you can make your plain- jane voice sound fresh and intriguing--just like the pros.

Griffin SmartDeck Intelligent Cassette Adapter with Dock Connector for iPod (White) Review

Griffin SmartDeck Intelligent Cassette Adapter with Dock Connector for iPod (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really, really wanted to like this product, but it was not to be. I bought it for use with my '05 Toyota Sienna. Here is a structured list of comments, marked + or -:
(+) Compatibility: the cassette drive accepted the product without spitting it back out. So far, so good.
(-) Appearance: white looks good in the package, but a bad, bad choice in the car. That white cable is pretty ugly hanging down from the cassette drive and I think it advertises to potential thieves that there might be an iPod in the car.
(+) Auto-play: the adaptor is supposed to start the iPod when the cassette starts. This worked fine.
(+) Auto-stop: the adaptor is supposed to stop the iPod when the cassette stops. This worked fine.
(-) Auto-forward: the adaptor is supposed to skip the iPod forward a track when the cassette fast-forwards. This didn't work.
(-) Auto-reverse: the adaptor is supposed to skip the iPod backward a track when the cassette rewinds. This didn't work.
(-) Reliability: the day after I bought it started emitting very loud static that made the music almost inaudible. I returned it for a replacement.
(-) Sound quality: very, very poor. This is really the deal breaker. Low-level static afflicted both the original unit and the replacement. This really shocked me. My generic cassette adaptor was much better than this. And so, the smartdeck went into the trash and I've resumed using the generic adaptor.
(-) Conclusion. I would strongly recommend against buying this product. I can't imagine how Griffin can justify selling it. It will be a long time before I consider buying anything more from them.

Belkin FM Transmitter for iPod (White) Review

Belkin FM Transmitter for iPod (White)

I absolutely love this transmitter. I originally used the iTrip from Griffin and was constantly having to change stations whenever I traveled just an hour away from my home. This item, however, has clarity and quickly takes over the FM station of your choice. The best stations to choose are ones with very little interference from another stations, but don't choose the stations with just a lot of static. The feature that allows you to save two particular stations that work the best for your car is extremely useful.

Belkin All-In-One Accessory Kit for iPod Review

Belkin All-In-One Accessory Kit for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm thankful I bought this product at Costco, because I could take it back for a full refund. The idea is appealing, and a good deal - you get a lot for a good price. But on closer inspection, there are a couple of significant problems:
1. The contents are redundant.
- Cassette adapter gives better sound than FM transmitter in many cases. If you have a car with a cassette player, you wouldn't need the FM transmitter. If your car doesn't have a cassette player, why would you buy a package with a cassette adapter in it?
- Similarly, at home, you'd get better sound on your stereo by using the cables vs the FM transmitter, even if you do have a tuner.
So unless you plan on using your ipod in a car with a cassette player, a car without a cassette player, and with your home stereo system, having cables, a cassette adapter and the FM transmitter is redundant. You may come out cheaper by buying the components you need separately.
2. The case is TERRIBLE! Honestly, if the case had been good, I would've overlooked the redundancy and likely kept the entire package. But the case was a key component for me. The case in this package covers the iPod on the front, back, sides, and bottom. Since the belt clip swivels, to prevent the iPod from falling out of the top, the case has a suction cup (no joke!) on the inside of the back panel. The case opens up in a flip-down style by un-velcro-ing the side panels. You nest your iPod into the case, sticking it to the suction cup, flip the front of the case into postion, and stick the side velcro strips together. Between the case itself, the suction cup, and the bulky belt clip, the iPod is more than twice as thick in the case as it is alone. It's also significantly wider.
My advice - keep shopping.

DLO TransPod All-in-One Car Solution for iPod White Review

DLO TransPod All-in-One Car Solution for iPod White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not my first attempt at finding an FM transmitter, but so far it's the best solution I've found.
My first try was with an iTrip and a Belkin car charger for my 4G iPod. I also needed a Belkin TuneDock to hold everything. Because the iTrip looked cool and was very portable I tended to overlook its very poor sound and frequent signal drift. The fact that you can not just tune the iTrip on the fly made this more and more of an issue. If you lost a station, you had to stop whatever was playing and go select another iTrip station by playing it on the iPod. Not convenient. Then the iTrip and charge both stopped working - so I started shopping.
Next, I tried a Soundfeeder. This has a manual tuning knob so at least I could tune around signal drift. But this was a hassle and it ran on AA batteries and the signal really degraded as the battery wore out. So, I went for the "All-in-one" solution...
The Transpod just works! I have had absolutely ZERO signal drift. This is on the same station and the same commute I did hundreds of times with the iTrip and Soundfeeder, and they faded or had dead spots a few times per trip. So, I am a big fan of the signal. The dock with its built in charging and tuning buttons is a very big plus. No used cupholders from the TuneDock and the adjustable arms allowed me to place the dock as out of the way as needed. I haven't had to tune to a new station (have I mentioned how great that is), but if I did, the buttons are right there. Now, I have had the iPod bump out of the dock and cause the sound in the left speakers to die before I pushed it back down, but I can live with that. Also, the adjustable arms are not exactly "sexy". It's a bit clunky, but I was after FUNCTION and I just wanted to stop having to adjust things while driving instead of listening. I don't have any issue with the quality of the material.
PROS: Signal strength; All-in-one transmitter, charger, holder minimizes hassle; ease of tuning; adjustable arm for positioning
CON: Not very attractive with all the arms snaking up your console. Not "ugly", just sort of "low-tech".
That CON was not enough for me to lower the 5-star ranking.

Do away with the clutter of CDs, cassettes, and jewel cases while on the road with the TransPod FM transmitter and charger, which plays your favorite iPod tunes through your car's stereo speakers. The TransPod powers itself via your car's cigarette lighter and broadcasts the iPod signal to any empty FM frequency on your dial--from 88.1 to 107.9 MHz. Should the reception at one frequency come in poorly, merely change frequencies by pressing the side button. And while you're busy listening to music, the TransPod is also charging your iPod at the same time, ensuring that it won't run out of juice in the middle of a long drive. The TransPod installs in any type of vehicle, and its adjustable mounting arm lets you position the iPod anywhere across the dash for easy access and control. The device also offers a line-out function so you can plug it directly into the car stereo via an optional cassette adapter or auxiliary plug. I'm using it with an old G4 Mac running Tiger to control iTunes and the OSX DVD Player. I only needed it to work in the room the Mac lives in because I just use it to control the volume, pause and skip on iTunes and the DVD Player. One oddity was that I need to reboot if I remove it and plug it in again for the Mac to see it. The other thing it took me a while to notice is that it seems like the granularity of the volume control is very course (10 steps) but if you hold the volume button down at the limits it actually changes the overall volume of the system so it's more useful than it seems as long as you don't mind the largish steps. It also took me a few minutes to realize it installed an icon on top of the screen that is used to select which app it is controlling. So it's not perfect, but it does what I wanted.

After not being happy with the iPod covers and recently purchasing an iPhone, I was looking a good mount FM Transmitter that I could use to charge my ipod and be able to listed to my music through the stereo. This device ended up being the perfect buy as it matched my interior and also did what it said it did. It even came with a cool little wireless remote so I can change stations and such on the fly. Definitely a good buy and I will probably get a couple more for christmas gifts since most of my friends own ipods.

Griffin RocketFM / FM Transmitter for Mac and PC Computers Review

Griffin RocketFM / FM Transmitter for Mac and PC Computers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Works out of the box. It draws power from the USB port and definitely gives a stronger signal when connected to a powered USB hub than an unpowered one.
The included software is very easy to use on a Mac and lets you set the broadcast frequency in increments of 0.1 MHz, which is useful if you live in an area with lots of radio stations, as I do. However, the signal strength is pretty low, so you're relying on your receiver to achieve adequate discrimination between bands.
In my area, I had to go to an in-between frequency (.4MHz) from the regular stations to cut down on interference. My two big receivers (Sony & Panasonic) can handle this. My boombox picks it up, but gets lots of interference from the neighbouring stations. My portable radio doesn't get anything. I did appreciate the fact that the frequency is selectable anywhere in the standard FM range. Something like the Line X USB FM Transmitter with four selectable frequencies would not stand a chance in my crowded area.
Placement of the unit is very critical. Reception will vary widely when moving the transmitter around (and presumably the same for the receiver). If you have the patience to tweak it, it gives good to very good reception.
It is also very important to set the computer output volume to avoid distorting the sound.
Bottom line:
It's good enough to pipe iTunes to my receiver in the living room, but I probably won't take it traveling. Not bad for $30.
I might try to take it apart and either attach a bigger antenna or try to boost the signal. Alternatively, the C Crane FM transmitter would be an option that already has instructions for boosting the signal (but doesn't use USB).

July 2006. After testing the Jwin, Griffen 30BK, Edge DiskGO, and the Kensington Pico, and the MITO, the MITO wins hands down. The JWIN is not plug and play and presented quite a bit of static, the Griffin could not muster the volume, as was the case with the Kensington, and the Edge was just a P.O.S., with no stereo transmission, and a battery door that would not close. My test was specifically for transmission to a Panasonic Boom box, used while on vacation. In both N.J. and N.C., the MITO performed well, with little static, and plenty of volume for those late night jam sessions after the kids and wives were asleep. Go with the MITO, you won't be sorry.

I bought this one for the design, to replace one I have that dangles from a power cord and the MP3 player plugs into the headphone jack. The design and style of this is much better. Feature-wise this one is great, but the old one sends a stronger, clearer FM signal. I just use mine to listen to podcasts - not music. I guess hardly anyone uses Shuffle anymore, so it was hard to find, but it is the perfect combination for podcasts in a car.

This has to be the worst fm transmitter in the whole world.
First off it is a pain in the but and goes through batteries up the wazoo.
Second off the cord that goes from the fm transmitter to the Ipod or mp3 device breaks very easily after not much use. I had to go buy a new cord at radio shack for it then come to find out it took a different jack than a reg headphone jack so I had to buy an addapter so that the cord would work.
Third and finally I bought the cord for nothing because not even a week later the part on the transmitter where you put the cord into fell into the device making it impossable to use it ever again!
Again I must say THIS IS THE CRAPPIEST PIECE OF JUNK I HAVE EVER BOUGHT.
