SIRIUS Sportster 4 Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit Review

SIRIUS Sportster 4 Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Long story short - Nice radio and programming with horrible FM modulation. Don't buy this unless you're going to wire it directly to your car's antenna or radio.
I bought this device last October to listen to college football games during long road trips. It is my first introduction to satellite radio. I've got mixed feelings about the product.
First of all, the unit was fairly easy to get working. I plugged the power and satellite antenna, turned it on, and selected an open FM station in the unit's setup menu. It's pre-tuned to a test station (national weather). I got a clear signal from the satellite just leaving the antenna resting on the dashboard. I activated it online after a couple of tries (didn't have the unit powered up the first attempt).
However, the FM transmission from the unit to my car stereo was awful, borderline un-useable. Even after choosing a completely clear FM station, turning off the car, waving the unit around until I found a sweet-spot, and crossing my fingers, there was always noticeable and very disruptive static interference. Based on what I've read, apparently the FM transmission strength for this unit way below previous models. I'm told the SP-TK2 model has a much stronger signal. I've not been able to determine whether or not that had anything to do with FCC regulations.
For my vehicle, I've overcame the FM transmitter shortcomings by connecting the unit directly to the Ai-net/Changer input on my Alpine radio and using the AUX function. This step eliminated all of the outside static interference and bypassed FM modulation completely. However, part of my attraction to this unit was the plug and play function. My friends and I have taken several road trips this year and I brought the Sirius unit with me. The cars we used did not have A/V inputs, so we had to make due with the lousy FM transmitter. We were able to fight through the static for the sports and talk radio stations, but music was un-listenable.
The unit itself is ok. It's easy to use and the screen has a lot of info. It keeps track of all the scores in sporting events, show and host for talk stations, and song/artist for music stations. It's awkward to mount though, because all of the wires plug into the back of the dock, not the bottom. You need clearance between the back of the unit and the mounting surface for these wires. My two options were to use an air conditioning vent clip or the windshield suction cup. I chose the vent because I didn't want the unit in the sunlight. At night, the unit is very bright. You can turn down the brightness of the screen, but the buttons are backlit with a piercing blue light that can't be adjusted. The rotary knob is especially bright. It looks like I have a big blue glow stick in my car at night.
The programming is pretty good. Sirius carries every NFL game, and nearly all the college football games, which is exactly what I was looking for. They also play a lot of the NBA and NHL games, but I've not paid much attention to them. They have three comedy stations, and several talk/news (including the BBC) radio and sports radio stations. On the other hand, all of their music stations do not meet my sound quality expectations. I have a decent aftermarket stereo, and the music stations sound worse than local FM. They're not terrible, but the difference between listening to a song on Sirius and on a CD is jarring. That said, they have a fair amount of genres represented. You'll hear songs on Sirius that you'll never hear on your local radio.
I've had limited customer service interaction, but it's been all bad. I chose the three month program to start off with. Sirius doesn't give you a very detailed invoice on the billing screen. It simply shows Subscription charge, Activation Fee, and Taxes. The Subscription charge on the invoice did not match what plan stated it should be, it was about $1 more. The Activation Fee was what I expected. However, Taxes came out to the 15% of the sum of Subscription plus Activation. There's not a state in the US that has a 15% sales tax rate. I called them to find out why it was so high. The lady on the phone had no idea what I was talking about. First she tried to explain why there was a charge for activation. It took quite a few minutes to get it across that my question was about the taxes, not the activation fee. Next, she tried to tell me that the tax rate was based on the Houston rate where she was located. The sales tax in Houston is 8.25%, not 15%. And besides, you are supposed to be taxed based on your local rates, not the location of the service center. After trying to get this point across (another 5 minutes) she went to speak to a manager. She came back and offered me a $15 dollar credit for the activation fee, without ever answering my question. I was tired of the conversation, so I took the credit and hung up. I'll try again to get an answer out of them when my three months are up.
All in all, the unit has sort of worked out for me. It works fine in my car, but travels poorly. I can listen to all the sports I want, but the music sound quality leaves much to be desired. It was easy to hook up, but looks silly just clipped onto my air-vent. If all of the short-comings I've described were addressed I'd be very happy with it.
**Update 12/19/2006**
Warning: The unit is dying on me less than three months after I purchased it. Sometime after around 10 minutes of use, the receiver will become locked into "acquiring signal" mode regardless of actual signal strength. Turning the unit off and then on again fixes it, sometimes. I've researched this issue online and apparently it's becoming a common problem. The recommended fix from Sirius is to either re-activate the receiver on-line or return it for a new unit. If I could, I'd knock another star off this review.
**Second Update** I eventually got SIRIUS to send me a replacement head-unit, free of charge. The second radio works just fine. However, I had to ship the original radio back to the manufacturer. A word of warning: if you ship something to Sirius, keep your tracking number. They tried to tell me that they never received my original radio and charged me for the second. I got on the phone and used the UPS website to tell them who in their warehouse signed for the package. The charge was later reversed.

SIRIUS ST4-TK1 Starmate 4 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit Review

SIRIUS ST4-TK1 Starmate 4 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall, the Starmate 4 is OK, but it has some significant design flaws that some thoughtful engineering could have easily fixed. I wish I had bought the Sportster 4. First, unlike the Sportster 4, this model does NOT incorporate the Auxillary Input feature for plugging in your MP3 player or other audio devices. Many of the online merchants advertise this, but it is not present on the Starmate 4 car dock. The addition of the Starmate 4 dock increases the size of the Starmate, which is thinner than previous models, but is now functionally larger in size because of the addition of the dock. A major design flaw (in my opinion) is that the antenna, power and auxillary output from the car dock are located on the back of the unit, rather than the bottom or sides. So, although the unit is physically thinner than previous models, by the time you install it, it is functionally thicker than previous models. In short, the footprint of the new Starmate is larger than previous models when you factor in the docking cradle and the location of the antenna, power, and audio connections. Since I bought this unit for a smaller footprint than the Sportster 4, I am dissappointed. I had hoped to install it flush with my dashboard by attaching velcro to the back of the unit similar to the way you could with the Starmate Replay.
The positive is that it DOES have a docking cradle which makes it much easier to move from the car to the home. If you don't need to move the unit around, then the Starmate 4 does not have any functionality that doesn't exist in the Starmate Replay. The addition on an auxillary input jack similar to the Sportster 4 would have offered a significant upgrade. If the designers for the next generation of radios are listening, I'd suggest spending time thinking about how people actually have to install these devices. Place the connectors on the bottom or sides of the docking cradle or provide a method of giving the user options. My 2006 Prius does not have any smooth surfaces for using the suction cup except for the windshield which slopes too much to allow convenient installation. Likewise the air conditioning vents don't work well in my vehicle for installation. Frankly, I'm sorry I spent the extra money for this unit. But, if you want a unit that can be moved easily from car to home, this is a good option. For flexibility, the Sportster 4 might be a better option since it does supply additional functionality for the same price.
Update: I've had this for 9-months now and it has worked flawlessly. However, I stand by my human factors design concerns stated in the initial review and think that a dock design could be created to give the user options for where the wires plug into the dock. We all jury-rig these radios into our cars, regardless of our personal preferences. The design of the radio, combined with the configuration of my car (Prius), required that I purchase an aftermarket windshield mount since the one that came with the radio would not work in my car.

Philips DLV92009 TransCast FM Transmitter Review

Philips DLV92009 TransCast FM Transmitter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Found a lightly used unit on Ebay for three bucks. Needed something small and battery powered to fit into an R/C ship model project so I could transmit from the ship to any radio set up on the shore. I like the stylish, minimal look. The controls are intuitive and I am impressed with how many frequencies are available. The frequency display is bright and sharp with a nice light almost florescent in appearance. The display shows in easy to read numbers the frequency, battery status icon and if you are transmitting mono or stereo. The display's down side is the 3 seconds it lights up before shutting the screen down.
The unit uses one AAA battery and it lasts about 8 hours per battery using Duracell pile alkaline power source. My advice for those who will be heavy users is to invest in the batteries that are rechargeable. Only weakness I could find in the power department is the battery is the only power source. You cannot plug a lighter socket in a car nor does it have the capability to run off a 120v step down power unit you can plug in the home's receptacle.
It came with the 3.5 headphone cord so you can plug any audio source that also has a 3.5 headphone jack.
The fit and finish are quality that you would expect from a Philips product but due to the mirror smooth black polish finish smudges easily.
Range inside house appears to be around thirty feet using an old Bell and Howard portable world band radio. Sound quality transmit is exceptionable and clear.
Bottom line: listed price of around 40 dollars makes this a bit pricey in relation to other units which do a good job at a cheaper price, having owned several mp3/car/transmitters. But if you can come across one of these at a cheap price used I would jump on it as the unit gets the job done.

Belkin FM Transmitter for iPod (White) Review

Belkin FM Transmitter for iPod (White)

I absolutely love this transmitter. I originally used the iTrip from Griffin and was constantly having to change stations whenever I traveled just an hour away from my home. This item, however, has clarity and quickly takes over the FM station of your choice. The best stations to choose are ones with very little interference from another stations, but don't choose the stations with just a lot of static. The feature that allows you to save two particular stations that work the best for your car is extremely useful.

RCA Lyra Wireless Transmitter Review

RCA Lyra Wireless Transmitter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hello All, Probably like some of you, I waffled for quite some time over whether to buy the RCA Lyra Wireless or not. Finally I plopped the dollars down and now I'm here to tell you that RCA Lyra does exactly what they say. And now, the particulars.
The setup was simple and straightforward, most of my time was spent moving my huge entertainment center from the wall so I could get to the back of my Sony receiver. I plugged the receiver into the MD/DAT slot, plugged it to a power source and every light on the signal indicator glowed green with joy. If only 802.?? were this simple. Ran the software to install the remote and musicmatch (not necessary, but I like it), checked all the audio settings per the manual and WIN XP had everything ready to go.

Went to the radio in Musicmatch and wow, the sound is outstanding, no hiss, just pure clean music. The manual stated that the Lyra could receive interference from cordless phones and recommended using position number four on both transmitter and receiver. I tried the others, turned on my cordless phone and no interference.
I subscribe to Rhapsody and Realone also. So naturally I tried each and they worked, matter of fact any and every sound that my computer makes come through the stereo. I do recommend you download the latest RCA Lyra software, it allows you to switch between players, currently Rhapsody and Musicmatch. But, like I said all the other players work as well, Media Player, MSN Radio Plus, Spinner, MoonTaxi, LaunchCast and more.
The remote control is awesome too, it does just as RCA states, I was surprised to learn that it closes whichever player you're listening to and it works through walls with no hesitation. If you're a Rhapsody user, you know that you can skip to the next song, the remote does that and more. It operates all other electronics as well, I haven't set it up for that yet, probably want, I have a nice Sony all you can control remote.
Well, I'm sure I may have missed something, but I've hit what's important to us all and that's the sound and the ease of setting it up.....PERFECTO. I'm very satisfied, actually it has exceeded my expectations. Lastly, it works, now go order yours!

I purchased the extrememac charger as I had heard good things about the quality of their products, I was sadly misinformed. The principle of the item is well thought out and if build quality could match concept they would have an excellent piece of kit. I found the whip to be loose and over a short period of time had dropped to below the horizontal no matter what angle it started, the nano would disconnect if a bump was incountered and the real killer for this item was as I removed it from my 12 volt socket for the first time the end of the 'plastic' socket snapped off with internal spring and fuse flying across the car. Over all I was very disappointed, the cost of the charger does not reflect the build quality, if you are tossing up between this and another product go the other brand, or just get the car charger cable. I found the air play transmitter work well when it wasn't moving around in the shoddy charger. BUYER BEWARE!!!!

All the accessories work pretty well, but the speakers fell and totally broke on day 2, so be careful where you place them or they might get damaged pretty quickly. The other reason I bought it was for the radio transmitter for the car which works great. No real complaints. Seller was prompt. Would order from them again.

I bought this so I could carry talk radio or podcasts around the house with me while I do chores, and it works beautifully. Includes a cable for connecting to your MP3 player. The quality of the speaker is not much better than a musical greeting card, so I would not recommend it for music.

DLO TransPod All-in-One Car Solution for iPod (Black) Review

DLO TransPod All-in-One Car Solution for iPod (Black)

I wasn't expecting a great solution when I purchased this item. I have tried similar products by other manufacturers and was disappointed. However, the Transpod gave me the sound I was looking for in an easy to install and use package.
Interestingly, I bought a direct connect via tape player type unit as well which is theoretically suppossed to deliver better sound quality. However, I found this was not the case at all. The Transpod does a much better job.
My unit also came with an extension bar so it could be mounted higher. This gets it up away from the ashtray. However, the criticisms about getting it to a place where it is safe to operate while driving is a real issue. It's not a big deal for me because I could make changes at lights or before I set out to drive somewhere. For others this may be a more serious problem, but really it isn't a bigger deal than fumbling with a cell phone while driving.
In order for this product to work properly, you need a very clean FM station that is not broadcasting. This is usually not a problem at the extreme ends of the FM broadcasting band in most locations. If this is a problem in your area, you may get static even on a fairly clean channel. I live in the Bay Area and I was able to find several useable channels.
I also think the design is well thought out in terms of travelling and needing to change channels. The device also you to set a number of alternate broadcasting frequencies as presets. This gives you the ability to change your channels easily while commuting. It is also very easy to change channels directly and the display is large and attractive.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy this product. I'm a musician and pretty fussy about sound. I'm completely satisfied with this product and would recommend it to anyone.
