(More customer reviews)I have used many different FM transmitters in my iPod history, and this one is no different than the others: if you can't find a weak FM station in your area, it's not going to work.
I originally and accidentally purchased the iPod-only version of the iTrip Auto (which oddly seemed to work with the iPhone, but I didn't want to take a chance so I got the proper version). Both of the devices worked fine on the FM transmitter functionality side of things. But all the FM transmitters I have used have worked fine (my previous model was a Kensington Pico for the iPod).
The sound quality to me is no different than the Pico, and as good as any other Griffin FM transmitter I have used. In general the sound quality of any FM transmitter just isn't going to sound as good as a wired connection, so I am basing my opinion relative to the technology. I think it sounds great, with the limitations of the technology in mind.
Cool iPhone features: when a call comes in, the music fades out so you can answer the phone and resumes when you're done (just as it does when using it without the iTrip). You can use the iPhone's features to do anything else you normally would, the iTrip does not hamper any functionality.
The cord is plenty long enough to place the transmitter or the iPhone just about anywhere you want.
I didn't test the Smart Scan feature as I already know which station I use in my area. Manually tuned it to the frequency and worked great.
I am sure the other negative reviews are valid from the experience they had with the product, but unless they were able to get another FM transmitter working for them in their area, my guess is that it's just the nature of the technology, and your experience will vary depending on how many FM stations are broadcasting in your area and how strong the signal is from those radio stations. The FCC puts limits on the signal strength these personal FM transmitters, so at least to some degree the manufacturer is limited to those restrictions.
For me, this was the perfect car audio/charging solution. In the past I opted for the super-mini FM transmitters that were powered by the iPod battery, but with needing a car charger for the iPhone anyways and realizing over the years that I really never used the FM transmitter outside the car, this all-in-one solution fit my needs perfectly.
I bought elsewhere, getting a much better price on this which added to my satisfaction with the iTrip.

After using this device for about a month now, I am extremely pleased with its performance. The audio coming through my vehicle's radio using this device with my Ipod is outstanding, with no hiss or other interferences. I prefer this device over other FM transmitters/chargers because it allows you to place your Ipod just about anywhere in your vehicle where it is convenient, due to the long cord on the device. The use of the cord on this device, as compared to other FM transmitters which require you to place your Ipod in/on the device, also allows me to keep the protective case on my Ipod at all times. The DLO TransDock Micro is a great addition to any compatible Ipod.

(More customer reviews)This item is not powerful enough if you are living in a big city with many radio stations. We bought this because our car's tape deck is non-functional, and wanted to listen to the MP3 player while driving. We experience lots of static and interference from "real" radio stations, and trying to re-tune the transmitter every five minutes doesn't seem to solve the problem. Not satisfied with the transmitting power of this product, although it may work better in a more rural, less "radio-saturated" area.

(More customer reviews)i just got this item and it barely worked and sounded worrible, the auxilary port is very weak and when you jiggle it, it goes in and out, i pulled the aux cord out and it went snap, and now doesnt work, lol ya its cheap but not worth .25 cents or the $5 to ship it, worthless.

(More customer reviews)I've used just about every MP3 player there is and this one is right there with the best of them. It's small light and extremely easy to use. You don't need ANY software to upload songs to it. The device shows up like a drive on your PC. You have the option of using Windows Media Player 11 to upload songs, but I'd rather just drag and drop songs or use my Napster subscription to upload songs from Napster's huge library. I thought 2GB wouldn't be enough but it is so easy to upload songs when my mood changes that it's never been an issue for me. If you like to watch movies then you may want to go with the larger 4GB (NWZS616) or 8GB (NWZS618) versions of this model since a typical movie takes up ~700K memory after you compress it to QVGA. If you want a larger screen size then you can get the NWZA815. That model is basically the same player with a larger screen. It also has a heavier metal shell, but it does not have an FM tuner like the NWZS615, and I wanted the FM tuner. I typically use my player in shuffle mode in my car and if I don't want to hear a song, it is a breeze to reach down and click just to the right of the center button to skip to the next song. I honestly can't see how anyone would be disappointed with this player especially when you consider the great price.

I live in the Phoenix area and I've never experienced problems. However, I had difficulty finding a frequency with clear reception in the LA area.
