Philips DC910/37 Shelf Bar 30-Watt Audio System with iPod Dock (Black) Review

Philips DC910/37 Shelf Bar 30-Watt Audio System with iPod Dock (Black)

The quality of the audio is considerably below higher end iPod Docks, but it's passable for a dorm room kind of setting. The sound is very compressed and does a decent job in the vocal frequencies and not a heck of a whole lot else. That said, the sound is better than you get with your typical Sony/iHome alarm clock iPod docks and it isn't a whole lot bigger. It also can be louder than those docks.
The ability to load in a SD card or Flash card for music is a nice feature that makes this audio system quite versatile. The remote is easy to use and fairly intuitive. Yes, you can rotate your iPod and watch TV shows and movies, but honestly, who wants to watch TV on such a tiny screen unless you're on a plane (in which case, you'd be using earphones).
The build on this unit is not particularly impressive and I'm guessing that it won't last more than three years. Then again, I won't have my iPod touch at that time either and will have moved onto something new.
If you can get this thing for less than 100 bucks, it's worth it. More than that, and you probably can do better with another dock.

Maxx Digital AM/FM/iPod Clock Radio Review

Maxx Digital AM/FM/iPod Clock Radio

The Good - easy setup, small- fits easily on the nightstand - holds the iPod well and charges it - the remote works reasonably well - sound is better than I expected for a clock radio unit. The tuner and the volume are on opposite sides so one doesn't get confused about what is being adjusted.
Features it could use - Duel alarm, presets for radio stations. Sleep function that works with the iPod (only the radio does that) - hello this is an iPod clock radio???!!!.
The Bad - The clock face is so bright it fills the room - could be used as a child's night light - I kept waking up and wondering what light I had left on. This is because they have the lighting reversed. The numbers should be lit and the background dark. The clock face is fairly large - so I thought I would be able to tell time at night or from a distance. More than three feet and I can't tell the time day or night. At night the light house warns you to stay away from the treacherous shores of the night stand. During the day - the contrast is too poor to make out the time unless one goes right up to the unit.
I have looked for a good iPod clock radio at a reasonable price. The bright light seems to be a common problem. Keep looking.

Rca Rc59I Clock Radio with Ipod Dock Review

I saw this for sale at a local store, so I thought I would do some digging for information. Unfortunately, there is almost zero. It doesn't say it anywhere online or on the box, but this will indeed charge your iPhone 3G. It's possible that they did not want to pay for licensing. Since it will charge the 3G, it should charge all of the new non-firewire iPods (Nano 5G, etc).
It's nice and compact, but certainly sturdy. Once you take a leaf through the instruction manual, it's very easy to use. Not one of those things I recommend to start pushing buttons feet-first, because you'll probably be woken up at 2:30am by accident.
What else can I say about it? It charges my iPhone, plays pretty well (a 5.1 system this isn't), has an aux-in for a Zune, etc, has dual-alarms with 3-4 different options each. If you're looking for a cheap replacement for your firewire-charging alarm clock, this is a good choice.

Coby Digital Dual Alarm/Clock Radio with iPod Docking System (Black) Review

There are some things I really like about this clock, and some things that really annoy me.
First the annoying things:
1) The *#&% scroll wheels. MESSAGE TO ALL MANUFACTURERS: Just because Apple has a scroll wheel doesn't mean you have to as well. They are not the be all and end all of UI devices. They work for the iPod because you hold it in your hand and you can navigate with your thumb. For an alarm clock this is not the case and (at least for me) they tend to be clunky and difficult to use. I would have gotten a clock without them, but I couldn't find one in my price range that also had good reviews.
2) The Backlight. I actually saw this issue in another review and bought the clock anyway. The problem is that the backlight is either on or it's off. Though there are ostensibly three dimmer modes, they do absolutely nothing that I can tell. When it's on, it's brighter than your desk lamp, and when it's off you can't see the screen in the dark. I keep it off, but then if I want to know what time it is in the middle of the night, I have to reach over to the clock and hit the dimmer switch.
3)The alarm volume is the same as the music volume. This is annoying if I want to listen to music as I go to sleep because when I'm trying to sleep I want the music quiet, but unless I somehow turn up the volume in my sleep, the alarm will be just as quiet in the morning. Pretty poor design, there.
Things I like:
1) There's a power button. I was really stoked when I saw this because my old iPod clock had absolutely no way to turn off the iPod/Radio/Aux Jack short of hitting the sleep button until the sleep timer hit zero.
2) With the volume up the alarm is loud. Really loud. I don't know if my neighbors appreciate that as much as I do, but at least it wakes me up in the morning. Most of the time.
3) There's a nap function. Enough said.
4) It does what it's supposed to and does it reasonably well. The sound is good, and I can hear it from across my apartment if I want to listen to podcasts while I do housework.
Overall, I'm happy with this iPod dock alarm clock. It works with a minimum of fuss, and for it's price it's a pretty good piece of equipment.
